DEALING WITH CRITICISMS

"Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.” Winston Churchill
criticisms can make you better

Criticism happens when certain persons undermine your achievements or personality. People also criticize you when you make a mistake or when they feel that you are the cause of the problem.
There will always be people who criticize you for many different reasons, regardless of who you are or what you achieve in life. Some of these reasons may be justified, while others are unjustified. Criticisms may also be destructive or constructive, regardless of the intention of the person giving it. There is an endless list of reasons, why people criticize you, and I have taken the time to list a few of them.

         Reasons People Criticize You

  • Because they hate you
  • Because they are jealous of you
  • Because you are better than them
  • Because you are successful
  • Because you are doing the right thing
  • Because you did something, wrong
  • Because they love and want the best for you

In this post, I would take the time to talk about the last reason stated above, which is that Some people criticize you “because they love and want the best for you”. You must understand that, not everyone who criticizes you, hates, despises, or is jealous of you.

As you make your journey through life, you must understand that everyone goes through one form of criticisms or another. The difference is that, some people use criticism to their advantage, while others allow it to hinder them from achieving their goals. For example, it makes no sense to give up your dream of becoming a successful author just because your last article was criticized. Rather, use such criticisms to become better.

Also, do you think a product like Apple, Toyota, or Microsoft will enjoy such growth, success, and credibility without the criticisms they receive about their products? Absolutely not. Anyone who enjoys success, or wants to be successful must give room for criticism- be it positive or negative. Why do you think someone would publish a book on amazon and ask for a review? They might call it review, but in the real sense of it, it is criticism. Even established and successful people recognize the need for feed back. They recognize that they are not perfect. They recognize the need for improvements and reassessment, in order to do things a better way.

How to Use Criticism to Improve your Life

No matter how painful or unpleasant criticism is, you can always use it to improve your life. Here are some of the best ways in which you can handle criticisms:
  1. Do not be angry. The first and most common reaction to criticism is anger. However, the wise choice will be to control your emotion and delay your action.
  2. Give yourself time to come to terms with the criticisms before you take any action.
  3. Look beyond the one criticizing you regards of the tone of voice and use of words, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. Look at what they said, meditate on it, find some truth, discard falsehood, and learn every lesson possible. See criticism as a chance to improve.
  4. Do not take criticisms personally or else, you will become bitter and angry. Your life will not become better for it.
  5. Do not allow low self-esteem and lack of confidence into your heart because a stranger or someone you know criticised you, for reasons best known to them.
  6. Avoid or ignore criticisms from people who you do not know and from those who despise you.
  7. Admit your mistake. Sometimes people rightly criticize you because you made a mistake or did something wrong. Be humble and wise enough to admit such mistakes because that is the only way you will grow.
  8. Handle criticism like it is a chance to prove others wrong.
  9. Do not try to answer or respond to every form of criticism. It is a waste of precious time and energy.
